- Description:

This study is about to determine the level of water quality of the river based on standard water quality index and to make a comparison the level of water quality (WQI) between June, July and August. The location of this study is at Sungai Melaka, Melaka (phase one) from River Cruise until estuary of Melaka River. The sample of the river water will be taken and brought to Melaka Biotechnology Corporation, Melaka. The sample will be used to run some testing such as pH value, turbidity and temperature, biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and total suspended solids (TSS). Water Quality Index (WQI) study was carried out along Melaka River. It involves the measurement of dissolved oxygen (DO), pH, biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), total suspended solids volume (TSS) and ammoniacal nitrogen (N) at two sampling stations which were in Taman Rempah and Muara Sungai Melaka. Through the researcher's observations, it was found that various pollutants were found throughout the study area such as direct wastewater treatment without village treatment, widespread solid waste disposal and development of surrounding areas contributing to Melaka River pollution.ÂÂ The results show that Melaka River falls into category III which is slightly polluted.ÂÂ According to the 'Interim National Water Quality Standard for Malaysia (INWQS)', the class IV streams are suitable for crop irrigation purposes only.
