STUDY ON SAFETY PRACTICES AT THE CARPENTRY AND PLUMBING WORKSHOP IN CIVIL ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT

Safety practices is important when doing practical activities in the workshop. The emphasis on safety practices must be nurtured to every student so that they could practices in the workshop. Hence this study is to identify the awareness on safety dress code, awareness of the safety rules and Compliance on safety dress code at the workshops. The location of this this study is Polytechnic Merlimau, Melaka (PMM). 60 respondent were students from semester 1 taking DCC code courses 1032; Carpentry and Plumbing workshop at PMM. The instrument used was 30 items in the form of questionnaires. The data collected was analysed using the descriptive statistics using the software “statically package for the Social Science (SPSS)” Version 25. From the analysis the means value of the awareness on safety dress code was 3.67, awareness of the safety rules was 3.75 and compliance on safety dress code was 3.67. Therefore the student’s level of knowledge on safety practices is moderate. However, the objective of this study was achieved because of the level and compliance of students was moderate. Nevertheless, an improvement steps are necessary to minimize the risk of accident such as briefings will provided by lectures about safety dress code, implement the safety protocol, and use label and sign about hazard.
