INTRUSION OF SALTWATER INTO THE MUAR RIVERS is investigation on communities in Muar River estuary was conducted from November 2018. Two stations are established for weekly sampling and located from the estuary to the downstream reaches of the river. Furthermore, from observation that the salinity intrusion in the study area and largely depends on the freshwater discharge rather than tidal elevation fluctuations. The objective of this study is to identify the level of water salinity at Muar River and to differentiate findings of water salinity at Muar River with the Standard from National Water Quality Standards for Malaysia (NWQS). Intrusion of saltwater can detect with testing of chloride. Chloride is found in nearly all waters derived from a number of sources, including natural mineral deposits, seawater intrusion or airborne sea spray, agricultural or irrigation discharges, urban run-off due to the use of de-icing salts, or from sewage and industrial effluents. It is usually combined with sodium and to a lesser extent with potassium, calcium and magnesium, which makes chloride one of the most stable components in water. Most rivers and lakes have chloride concentrations of less than 50 mg / l and any marked increase may be indicative of sewage pollution or, if the increase is seasonal, urban run-off linked to the application of rock salt to roads. The chloride content of a sewage effluent under tidal flow could increase the chloride content of the receiving water by as much as 70 mg / l. Brackish or estuarine waters can contain several hundred mg / l of chloride, with seawater typically containing around 20 000 mg / l.'
